A SPECIAL EFFECTS MASTER CLASS FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS. postponed. Now being being held FEBRUARY 18 & 19, 2012.
Wondering how to do multi-‐million dollar effects on an indie budget?
No idea where to start for doing a special effects budget breakdown for your script? Need to know what to consider from a special effects perspective as a DOP or Director?
Then this course is for you!
Learn the basics of how to do special effects for film including how to properly plan and integrate effects into the pre-‐production, budgeting, and scheduling process, things to consider from a safety, regulatory, technical and directorial perspective when shooting FX, as well as a hands-‐on introduction to different types of effects ranging from mechanical FX to special effects make-‐up, and prosthetics, creature and character effects.
DAY ONE:
Location: EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society #203 , 351 – 11 Ave. SW.
Time: 9am – 5pm with a one-‐hour lunch break and two 15-‐min. coffee breaks.
Learn how to properly plan and integrate effects into the pre-‐production, budgeting, and scheduling process, as well as things to consider from a safety, regulatory, technical and directorial perspective when shooting FX including:
• Integration and use of effects to enhance the storyline;
• Script breakdown;
• Budgeting;
• SPFX considerations related to art direction, DOP needs, shooting schedule; • Safety and environmental considerations;
• Regulatory, training, and/or certification requirements;
• Integration and relation of mechanical FX with computer generated effects; and • SPFX considerations related to post production requirements.
DAY TWO: (*The second day will be capped at 12 students because of the hands-‐on nature of the instruction)
Location: Bleeding Art Industries 3-‐3815 61 Ave. SE. (We can arrange a car pool option if requested)
Time: 9am – 5pm with a one-‐hour lunch break and two 15-‐min. coffee breaks.
Receive hands-‐on introduction to different types of effects ranging from mechanical FX to special effects make-‐up, and prosthetics, creature and character effects including:
- • What equipment and products are available to achieve certain effects and demos of some of these;

• An introduction to the basics of special effects make-‐up and products and resources available for this
aspect of FX; and -
• Considerations and use of creature and character effects in film.
The SPFX Master Class is led by award-‐winning special effects expert, and Bleeding Art Industries founder and co-‐ owner Leo Wieser.

The Calgary Underground Film Festival will be able to provide subsidies for three people interested in taking this SPFX Master Class.
If you would like to apply for subsidy, we request that you have:
- Working script/ project (short or feature length) for 2012

Will plan to have its Calgary premiere at the 9th annual Calgary Underground Film Festival -‐ April 16-22
2012. Projects slated for later in 2012, can still apply, if you hold off on your local premiere until the 10th Calgary Underground Film Festival.
